A very elderly female driver has caused an accident in Pausa-Mühltroff (Vogtland) through risky driving behavior. A motorcyclist crashed and was slightly injured. According to the Zwickau police department, the 86-year-old woman suddenly performed a 180-degree turning maneuver in moving traffic. This came as such a surprise to a 34-year-old motorcyclist driving behind her that he was unable to brake in time and collided with the car, they said.
The regular testing of older people's fitness to drive is a recurring topic of discussion. In spring 2023, the EU proposed a driving license reform, including a time limit on driving licenses for people aged 70 and over - which could result in regular checks to renew driving licenses. According to ADAC, such tests are already common practice in some EU countries. In Germany, the focus is on the personal responsibility of road users.
