Fuel more expensive in the south

Filling up is currently most expensive in Bavaria and Saxony. The three city states, on the other hand, are relatively cheap, according to a recent ADAC analysis. The differences are significant, with more than eight cents per liter between the cheapest and most expensive federal state for both diesel and Super E10.

The order has changed significantly compared to the last ADAC analysis in March. Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate have seen particularly significant price increases. While Bavaria was still in the middle of the price range among the federal states in March, diesel is now the most expensive there and E10 the third most expensive. Rhineland-Palatinate slipped from the third cheapest place for diesel to the fifth most expensive, and even the second most expensive for E10.

Drivers in Saxony are slightly more affected, with the most expensive E10 and the second most expensive diesel. However, the state has long been one of the most expensive.

City states cheap

Fuel is currently particularly cheap in the city states. Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg lead for E10, Bremen for diesel - followed by Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Hamburg and Berlin are in fifth and sixth place respectively.

After several months with relatively few changes in regional differences, the fall in the price of oil and the strong dollar have not only caused fuel prices to fall overall, but have also led to movement on the regional markets, according to the ADAC.

Does the low water level on the Rhine play a role?

The ADAC did not comment on whether the current low water level on important waterways such as the Rhine could have played a role in the rising fuel prices in Bavaria - although there have been similar effects in the past. This would be consistent with the fact that Baden-Württemberg has also deteriorated in the ranking of cheap fuel countries - albeit to a much lesser extent than Bavaria.

Although both the strong euro and the much lower oil price should actually be causing fuel prices to fall significantly, according to the transport club, too little has happened here so far. On a nationwide daily average on Monday, Super E10 cost 1.681 euros per liter. That was 2.2 cents less than at the end of March - although oil was still significantly more expensive then. Diesel cost 1.577 euros on Monday - 3.4 cents less than at the end of March. The end of the heating season, which typically has a dampening effect on the price of diesel in spring, may also have played a role here.
