The downward trend in the East German construction industry has slowed. Taking into account the rise in construction prices, "both demand for construction services and construction activity fell in real terms in 2024, but the downward trend in the construction industry has slowed significantly," said Robert Momberg, Managing Director of the Construction Industry Association East.
In total, orders in the main construction sector in Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt amounted to 19.3 billion euros last year. This figure was 1.3 percent higher than the non-price-adjusted comparative figure for the previous year. In public construction, there was a nominal increase in orders of 12.2 percent.
"The next few months will show whether the bottom has been reached"
Housing construction, on the other hand, recorded a drop of 10.3 percent. Orders had a value of 2.7 billion euros. Sales revenues in residential construction also slumped, according to the figures, "the comparative figure for 2023 was missed by 17.0 percent in nominal terms". Momberg said that the new federal government must first and foremost stimulate the economy and remove obstacles to the creation of housing.
The current slight stabilization of the construction industry is on very weak foundations. "So the next few months will show whether the bottom has already been reached," said Momberg.
