Some ski resorts in Saxony are starting the winter season this weekend. According to the Saxon Ministry of Tourism, the ski lifts in Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge and in Eibenstock in the Westerzgebirge will open on Saturday. In Oberwiesenthal at the foot of the Fichtelberg, the start of the season is to be celebrated on Saturday - albeit without skiing. Most ski resorts are planning to open the slopes in the coming week.
There are 67 ski resorts and more than 40 ski lifts in Saxony - mostly operated by private clubs. Oberwiesenthal is the largest ski resort in the state with six lifts. The lifts are located at an altitude of 914 to 1,215 meters.
"Our winter sports regions are an important factor for Saxony's tourism, as they attract thousands of guests from near and far to the state every year," said Saxony's Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU). However, as snow can no longer be taken for granted, it is crucial that winter sports resorts also position themselves as year-round destinations. This would allow guests to enjoy attractive experiences whatever the weather, while the existing infrastructure would be used in a more versatile way.
