The Thai market in Berlin-Wilmersdorf is moving from Preußenpark to Württembergische Straße. Criticism of the lack of concepts and citizen participation.

The so-called Thai market in Berlin-Wilmersdorf will no longer take place in Preußenpark at the start of the season in April. On Thursday evening, the district council (BVV) decided to move the market to Württembergische Straße for two years at the request of the CDU and Greens, as Claudia Buß, deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group in the BVV, explained on Friday. The SPD parliamentary group had opposed the proposal. The market is set to move to Barstraße in 2026.

The Thai market has been around for many years. From spring to fall, Thai food is offered there every Friday to Sunday at many stalls.

According to the CDU and Greens in the district council, the move is necessary to protect nature in the park and to avoid waste and traffic problems there. The SPD is opposed to this and referred to concepts for keeping the market in the park, which were developed with the participation of many citizens. All possible alternative locations in the vicinity were unsuitable.

Buß emphasized that many questions had not been clarified at the new locations. In Württembergische Straße, for example, there are no precise plans for the fire department access routes, and the site is even closer to the residents. The BVG has a break stop in Barstraße, but the transport company was not sufficiently involved in the process.

The Left Party in the BVV also criticized the decision. The district office still has no valid concept for the relocation, said Frederike Gronde-Brunner, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Left Party. "No talks have been held with the affected Thai community, local residents, the BVG, the fire department or businesses." It currently remains unclear whether the plans can be implemented at all.
