At a party conference this weekend in Chemnitz, the Left Party wants to get in the mood for the election year. The two chairpersons will be elected on Saturday. Party leader Stefan Hartmann and co-chair Susanne Schaper want to lead the Saxon Left Party into the state election campaign as top candidates. Thuringia's Minister President Bodo Ramelow will address the delegates beforehand. After the local elections and the European elections in June 2024, the state elections will follow on September 1.
After the split of the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance", the party in Saxony has recently presented itself as stable. Party leader Hartmann recently said that some people's fears that entire district associations could switch to the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" had not materialized. The party is far from having a profound problem. Saxony's Left Party currently has around 6,100 members and is the third-largest state association after North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin.
Wagenknecht announced her resignation from the Left Party and plans to found a new party at the beginning of last week. Initially, the association "Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht" is to collect donations for this. The founding of the party is planned for January.
