From February to September, the number of unauthorized entries into Germany rose steadily. The Federal Police have new figures for October that point in a different direction.

The number of refugees entering Germany without permission will be significantly higher this year than in previous years - however, the upward trend was halted in October. The Federal Police recorded 112,178 unauthorized entries from January to October, the Federal Police Headquarters announced in Potsdam on Monday. Last year as a whole, they registered almost 92,000 unauthorized refugees. According to the German government, the last time the number was higher was in 2015, the year of the so-called refugee crisis, with around 217,000.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) had initially announced stationary border controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland on 16 October for ten days and then extended them several times.

From February onwards, the number of unauthorized refugees initially rose continuously and made a big leap from September to October in particular. According to the Federal Police, 14,701 unauthorized entries were recorded in August, 21,366 in September and 20,059 in October.

From the beginning of January to the end of October, around 267,000 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time - around 67 percent more than in the same period last year.
