The Free Voters in Saxony (FW) want to stick to a conservative course following their defeat in the Bundestag elections. FW chairman Thomas Weidinger clearly rejected an orientation "to the left of the CDU". "The Free Voters must adopt the position that the CDU had before Angela Merkel," Weidinger told the German Press Agency in Dresden.
Free Voters' election defeat
The Free Voters only achieved 1.5 percent nationwide in last Sunday's federal election. In Bavaria, where the party traditionally performs best, approval fell sharply, leaving the party at 4.3 percent. In Saxony, it achieved 2.3 percent of the second votes.
Weidinger: Close the gap between the CDU and AfD
Weidinger spoke of a significant change of course with a view to the future and called for consequences after the election defeat. The aim is to fill the gap between a Union that has moved to the left and an increasingly radical AfD. "We need a sensible party in Germany that gives the bourgeois camp a home." This is the only way to place the Free Voters in the right position.
"The Free Voters are the force of the middle class that offers voters who do not feel represented by either the CDU or the AfD a modern, conservative political platform," emphasized Weidinger. In the future, the party must remain the "conservative party capable of satisfying voters", which is primarily committed to the interests of the working population and the middle class with crafts and agriculture.

With regard to the federal chairman of the Free Voters, Weidinger said: "Hubert Aiwanger is setting this course and has the full backing of the Saxon state association." However, Secretary General Gregor Voht was a "clear miscast". The position of Secretary General requires a high level of loyalty, especially to the Federal Chairman. This is no longer the case.
