Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has highlighted the efforts of the state police to curb illegal migration. Since the beginning of September, the police in the border area weekly 10 to 12 smugglers as well as around 400 people caught illegally crossing the border, said the CDU politician according to his ministry on Thursday at a special hour in the Bundestag.
Schuster also criticized the federal government. This had not succeeded so far to reduce illegal migration sustainably. Until now, mayors and district councils stand in Saxony as guarantors for the joint management of the situation. This puts the federal government at risk and alienates those who shouldered the brunt of this situation, Schuster said.
According to his ministry, about 1,000 people a week arrived at initial reception facilities in Saxony in September. The Free State has increased its capacity to about 9000 places.
