Matthias Rößler (CDU), President of the Saxon State Parliament, praises the Basic Law as a milestone in the history of German democracy on its 75th anniversary.

On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, Matthias Rößler (CDU), President of the Saxon State Parliament, has praised the German Basic Law as a "milestone in the history of German democracy". "The Basic Law is one of the greatest achievements in German history," he said at a ceremony in the state parliament in Dresden on Thursday. It was created as a counter-draft to the totalitarian Nazi state and meant freedom instead of oppression, the rule of law instead of arbitrariness, peacefulness instead of violence, popular rule instead of dictatorship. "We can be more than proud of our constitution," said Rößler. It is the best the Germans have ever had.

Rößler particularly emphasized the role of the first article, the inviolability of human dignity. This was the basis for all other sections: Fundamental rights, separation of powers and state structure. "They should serve the individual." Citizens in East Germany also appreciate the promises made to them by the Basic Law. A democracy can only be liberal. "That's what we Saxons fought for in 1989 and 1990."

A defensive democracy is needed to protect it against its enemies. "Extremism in any form, violent attacks on campaigners and politicians, are unacceptable," said Rößler. Citizens also have a great responsibility to protect democracy - each and every one of them is needed.

This Thursday, the state parliament is commemorating the entry into force of the Basic Law 75 years ago. May 23, 1949 also marks the founding date of the Federal Republic of Germany. The program also included a musical reading by the Berlin brass quintet OPUS 45 together with actor Roman Knizka.
