A motion by the Greens for the option of a "no" vote has been rejected in the Saxon state parliament ahead of the vote to elect the Minister President. A clear majority of MPs voted against it, as the president of the state parliament Alexander Dierks (CDU) stated. However, there was a "considerable number" of yes votes. In addition to the Greens, the AfD also voted in favor of the motion. The CDU, BSW and SPD rejected the motion, while the Left Party abstained.
Greens parliamentary group leader Valentin Lippmann tabled the motion at the beginning of the meeting. He explained that the election was taking place under special conditions and that this was the first time a minister-president was running with a minority government in Saxony.
Lippmann referred to the results of an expert report commissioned by his parliamentary group. This came to the conclusion that, according to the Saxon constitution, no-votes must be possible for more than one candidate.
The president of the state parliament, Dierks, takes a different view. He justified this with the nature of the question, among other things. It was not a question of whether, but who would be elected Minister President.
