Sahra Wagenknecht has accused the German government of a "loss of reality". A few days before the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, she compared the current situation to the mood at the end of the GDR during an appearance in Dresden.
Those who experienced the end of the GDR are now experiencing déjà vu, she said to the applause of her supporters on Dresden's Schlossplatz. "You get the impression that those at the top can no longer cope, they are no longer solving the problems. They have no concept, no vision, no plan for the future."
The Federal Republic is not the GDR, but there are parallels between 2024 and 1989, Wagenknecht told the German Press Agency on the sidelines of the rally. "The political distance and cultural alienation between the government and the population are enormous. Incompetence, overbearing policies and a lack of reality remind many East Germans of times they thought were long gone. Whether it's foreign policy, migration or energy policy: the government seems to be living in a completely different world."
Wagenknecht: Elections also a vote on the end of traffic lights
According to Wagenknecht, the current state elections are therefore more important than usual. "They are now also a vote on the end of the traffic light system, which should not lead our country into crisis for another year. If the traffic light parties do not enter the state parliaments, they cannot simply carry on in Berlin's government district as if nothing had happened." During her speech on Dresden's Schlossplatz, Wagenknecht blamed the established parties for the rise of the AfD, in which there are right-wing extremists and Nazis.
Wagenknecht sees BSW as a force for change
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) could bring about change. In the interests of well-integrated immigrants, uncontrolled migration must be stopped. This creates a mood in the country that is directed against the many righteous migrants who are an important part of society.
Wagenknecht received much applause for her statements on the war in Ukraine. She condemned Russia's attack. "This war is a crime. Everything must be done to end this war." However, this cannot be achieved by supplying more and more weapons.
A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony and Thuringia on Sunday. Former Left Party member of the Bundestag Sabine Zimmermann will be the lead candidate for BSW in Saxony; the party is polling at up to 15 percent and could therefore become part of a new government in Saxony.
