The Volt party wants to support the SPD in the state election campaign. The parties announced this jointly in Dresden on Thursday. "There is a difficult majority in the state parliament and progressive forces are needed," said Kevin Schellenberg, Saxon state chairman of Volt. His party is not standing in the election itself. Due to the small team, they were unable to approach the state election campaign as they would have liked and therefore looked for ways to still participate.
In addition to similarities in content, the decision to support the SPD was ultimately based on the successful cooperation in the last mayoral election in Dresden. Volt treasurer Kay Schomburg added that they wanted to take part in campaign stands, posters and other events. It is also about public relations and especially about social media, where Volt is very active. Volt also wants to make a recommendation to its own voters to vote for the SPD.
SPD is pleased about the collaboration
"It's great that we are bringing a new splash of color to our election campaign with this collaboration," said SPD lead candidate Petra Köpping. "For me, Volt stands for optimism, for energy, for positive commitment, for openness and constructive solutions." She is pleased that "the old aunt SPD" is working together with such a young party.
Volt approached the SPD a few weeks ago with an offer of support, said SPD state chairman Henning Homann. "We have found a good overlap so that this cooperation can come about." The common goals are the promotion of European positions at Saxon level and the strengthening of progressive forces in the Free State.
The SPD and Volt already cooperate at local level in some federal states, forming joint parliamentary groups in the city councils of Stuttgart and Munich, for example. In the European elections, Volt achieved 1.8 percent in Saxony, and in the local elections it was elected to the city council of Dresden. According to Schellenberger, the state association has 176 members. The party joined the Greens group in the European Parliament.
