Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer, CDU lead candidate in the state elections on 1 September, has called on people to strengthen the democratic center. "It is a fateful election, everything is at stake here," he said at a rally in Dresden. Whether the Free State "still has this stability" after the election will be decided by the strength of the CDU/CSU. For the last six days, it needs a tailwind and "that we stick together".
Kretschmer appeals for voters' trust
"It's about very, very few votes, the question of who is the strongest force. We have to be ahead so that we have the mandate to govern and so that this country really has a good future," explained Kretschmer. It's about Saxony, "it's our election, it's decided for all of us with this election".
Federal CDU chairman Friedrich Merz and CSU leader Markus Söder also campaigned for Kretschmer. He was the right man for the job and for Saxony. Merz thanked his federal deputy for his "great contribution" to the renewal of the CDU after losing the 2021 federal elections. Söder said that Saxony was one of the most successful states in the country and should be proud of this.
Söder warns against AfD
Kretschmer needs a vote on Sunday so that he can tell "the one or other misguided person" more strongly where to go in a coalition, said the CSU leader. There was no point in voting for anything that would ultimately lead to Saxony becoming weaker. "It only makes sense to vote for the Union." Söder made a clear rejection of the AfD: "Quite apart from the people behind it, the whole bunch behind it is leading our country into the completely wrong corner, such people must not be in charge in Saxony and in Germany."
