The number of births in Saxony continues to fall. "Compared to the previous year, the number fell by 3,137 live births or 10.7 percent," announced the State Statistical Office in Kamenz.
The period from 1992 to 1997, in which fewer than 30,000 births were recorded annually, is known as the "birth low of the 1990s", from which the state only temporarily emerged. According to the data, the number of births has been falling since 2017 and has also been below 30,000 again since 2022. "With 26,194 live births in 2023, this trend continued and reached its lowest level since 1995," the statistics office added.
While the number of births to mothers with German citizenship almost reached the lowest level since 1994, the number of births to foreign mothers increased continuously. While 773 children were born to mothers with foreign nationality in 1994, this figure had already risen to 4,595 last year.
According to provisional figures, the decline in births continued in the first quarter of 2024. According to the figures, around 5,930 children were born alive from January to March. This means that 550 fewer births were registered compared to the same months in the previous year - a decrease of 8.4 percent. According to the statistics office, the trend, which has been ongoing since 2016, is partly due to the steady decline in the number of women of childbearing age.
