Defending champions SC Magdeburg kick off the new Bundesliga season in front of their home crowd. After improving in the second half, the team from the Elbe city clearly won against HSG Wetzlar.

Defending champions SC Magdeburg have started the new Handball Bundesliga season with a home win. 6,660 spectators in the sold-out Getec Arena saw a 35:28 (18:16) win against HSG Wetzlar. Magdeburg's top scorer was Omar Ingi Magnusson with nine goals.

The champions were without Felix Claar, Tim Hornke and Oscar Bergendahl due to injury. Coach Bennet Wiegert started with Gisli Kristjansson and Philipp Weber in the backcourt. Both teams initially lacked access. Magdeburg lacked concentration at times, but the home side still led at the break.

The SCM increased its lead to four goals after the break with a double strike and now seemed to have the game under control. Although the visitors came back to within two goals, Magdeburg was no longer impressed. Instead, SCM went on a 6:0 run to open up an eight-goal gap and decide the game.
