No World Championship medal for women's doubles

The German lugers missed out on the doubles medals at the World Championships in Altenberg by a clear margin. Defending champions Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal finished the race on Saturday in 13th place, 4.079 seconds behind Austria's Selina Egle and Lara Michaela Kipp after two mistakes. Anda Upite/Zane Kaluma from Latvia took silver. Chevonne Chelsea Forgan and Sophia Kirkby from the USA won the bronze medal.

European champions Degenhardt/Rosenthal had only finished 14th in the sprint on Friday. "Turn nine didn't want to go with us. And we didn't want curve nine," said Jessica Degenhardt on ZDF. "I'm disappointed." Her partner Cheyenne Rosenthal said: "Just tick it off. We can move on. We're still at the front in the World Cup and then we'll go for it."

Dajana Eitberger and Saskia Schirmer also made mistakes in the ice channel and finished sixth, 0.843 seconds behind the winners. The third German pairing of Elisa-Marie Storch and Pauline Patz finished twelfth after the two runs in the Altenberg ice channel.

"This result is very sobering," said national coach Norbert Loch. "I can't quite understand it. We mastered this ominous turn nine very well in training. The bottom line is that it's very disappointing."

The men's singles and men's doubles competitions are still on the program at the World Championships in the Osterzgebirge on Saturday. The title fights end on Sunday with the women's singles and the team relay.
