Lothar Matthäus has demonstratively come to Max Eberl's defense after renewed fan abuse. "I want to break a lance for Max Eberl," the Sky pundit (62) told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur ahead of RB Leipzig's top match against FC Bayern Munich on Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky).
The Leipzig manager was once again the target of hostility from supporters of his ex-club Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend. At the 1-0 of RB was for a short time in the north curve of Borussia Park a banner to see. "First I'll get myself a sick bill, then I'll keep counting bill by bill," it read. In addition, Eberl was depicted on a banner as a pig. Eberl had resigned at the end of January 2022 exhausted as Gladbach sports director, according to his own statement.
"He used the time to get healthy and start a new beginning. He had to take this time out," said the German record international. "He then went to RB Leipzig and thus to a club he once criticized during his Gladbach time. But times change. Only stupid people do not change their minds."
In Matthäus' opinion, the 50-year-old is now doing an excellent job in Leipzig. The loss of several key players in the past summer he has compensated "with bravura".
That Eberl was therefore recently again strengthened with a change to FC Bayern in connection brought, does not surprise Matthäus. "Bayern Munich wants good people in the most important positions. That's why he must be a topic," says Matthäus. Nevertheless, he does not expect him to leave Leipzig in the near future. "I assume that he is one who does not change the club so quickly."
