After an abrupt disappearance following the heated court hearing with Jan Böhmermann, Meissen beekeeper Rico Heinzig is back. In an interview with the Sächsische Zeitung, he reveals why he withdrew and how he experienced the media attention. Interestingly, the trial took place without the physical presence of Böhmermann, who was represented by his lawyer instead.
"The media pressure, triggered by Jan Böhmermann and ZDF, was and is difficult to bear," Heinzig explains his sudden absence. The beekeeper, who prefers his peace and quiet to publicity, asked for understanding for his situation and would like the press to keep in touch exclusively via his law firm.
Heinzig describes the court hearing as a "pure war of position" in which he faced an experienced lawyer. "You do get a bit excited," he admits, adding that he found the judge's comprehensive preparation impressive, even though the ZDF presenter was not present himself.
However, he did not find everything about the hearing positive. Heinzig criticized the prosecution's reasoning: "Well, Mr Böhmermann was able to drag me into the public eye with impunity and can continue to do so, as he is a satirist and has no commercial interest in violating my personal rights." Heinzig sees a double standard here, as in his opinion Böhmermann is definitely pursuing commercial interests, even if he did not appear in court in person.
