If you can imagine working as a GP in a rural region of Saxony, you can now apply for a place to study medicine again. As part of the rural doctor quota, 40 study places are available for which you do not have to meet the strict numerus clausus for medicine. Applicants commit to working as a GP in the countryside for at least ten years after completing their training.
According to the Saxony State Directorate, applications can be submitted between January 15 and February 28. In the two-stage selection process, the first step is to see how suitable and motivated the applicants are to work as a rural doctor. This is followed by a selection interview.
Interest in rural doctor study places is increasing
Students can study in Leipzig, Dresden or Chemnitz. The 40 rural doctor study places correspond to 6.5 percent of all medical study places in Saxony. This means that there are a total of 615 places to study human medicine in the state.
Interest in studying medicine via the rural doctor quota has grown steadily in Saxony. According to the Ministry of Health, 130 applications were received for the places last year. In the two years before that, there were 119 and 67 applications respectively.
