Those who want to work as a GP in rural Saxony in the future can apply for a place to study medicine via the rural doctor quota until the end of February. As part of this model, 40 study places are available for which the strict numerus clausus for medicine does not have to be fulfilled, as announced by the Saxon Ministry of Health. Applicants undertake to work as a GP in the countryside for at least ten years after completing their training.
Saxony urgently needs more junior staff to replace retiring GPs and specialists, emphasized Health Minister Petra Köpping. "Being a doctor is a dream job for many people. Working on and with people is fulfilling, but also very responsible. Your commitment is our future," emphasized the SPD politician.
Interest in studying medicine via the rural doctor quota has increased
Students can study in Leipzig, Dresden or Chemnitz. According to the state directorate, the 40 rural doctor study places correspond to 6.5 percent of all medical study places in Saxony. This means that there are a total of 615 places to study human medicine in the state.
Interest in studying medicine via the rural doctor quota has grown steadily in Saxony. According to the Ministry of Health, 130 applications were received for the places last year. In the two years before that, there were 119 and 67 applications respectively.
