The first weekend in August brings considerable traffic delays in central Germany. Holidaymakers and returnees should be prepared for long waiting times.

The first weekend in August could be a test of patience for many drivers. According to the ADAC, the freeways in central Germany are expected to be full, as traffic jams are to be expected in all three federal states due to vacation return traffic. While the vacations are coming to an end in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony and school has already started again in Thuringia, many other federal states are still on vacation.

Return travel traffic to Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt

In Saxony, traffic is expected to be restricted on the Autobahn 9. Due to the closure of the directional lane from Halle to Großkugel, traffic will be diverted, which will lead to full roads and thus traffic jams on the secondary routes, according to the automobile club. The A4 near Grimma, between the Nossen and Dresden interchange and at the Königshainer Berge tunnel are also likely to be particularly congested.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the ADAC expects traffic jams and obstructions on the A9 between Naumburg and the border with Thuringia and between Dessau and Coswig, as well as in the Leipzig/Halle and Magdeburg conurbations. There may also be traffic jams on the A2 between the Marienborn/Helmstedt and Eilsleben junctions as well as on the A36 and A38.

Traffic situation in Thuringia somewhat more relaxed

As school has already started again in Thuringia, the ADAC is assuming a moderate traffic load here. However, due to the return traffic from the surrounding federal states, there could be temporary obstructions on the main roads around the Erfurt junction as well as on the A4 (Erfurt towards Chemnitz) and the A9 (Nuremberg towards Berlin).

According to the ADAC, the roads are likely to be full as early as Friday afternoon. Drivers should inform themselves about the current traffic situation before setting off and plan alternative routes if possible. Due to the summer temperatures, the automobile club advises drivers to have enough water in their car for longer journeys.
