Two people from Saxony were killed in a serious traffic accident on the Autobahn 59 near Duisburg on Friday night. According to police reports, their car was hit from behind by a speeding car. The 33-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred near the Duisburg-Hochfeld junction.
The two victims in the small car in front, a 43-year-old man and his 80-year-old mother, died at the scene. Both were from Saxony, a police spokesperson said at midday. The person suspected of causing the accident was known to the police.
Both cars completely destroyed
Both vehicles were completely destroyed in the accident. Judging by the damage, the driver must have been driving too fast, said a spokesperson. The man was trapped in the wreckage of his car. Firefighters freed him and rescue workers took him to hospital. Dozens of forces were deployed at the scene during the night.
Highway closed for several hours
An accident investigation team secured the lanes for several hours. Meanwhile, the A59 in the direction of Düsseldorf remained closed. The cause of the accident was initially unclear, according to reports. The police are investigating the driver on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.
