The Christmas tree for this year's Dresden Striezelmarkt has been secured. The Nordmann fir, which is around 25 meters tall, was felled in Freital on Saturday morning and transported to the old market square in the state capital on a low-loader. A number of onlookers watched the event there.
The tree is estimated to be around 100 years old and was due to be felled anyway due to a new building project, according to the city of Dresden. For the Striezelmarkt, which is entering its 590th edition this year, the tree will be decorated with many lights.
The search for a particularly beautiful Christmas tree is a matter close to the city's heart every year, explained Steffen Rietzschel, Head of the Office for Economic Development. It is an important symbol of the Striezelmarkt and a popular photo motif. According to the city, the Christmas market attracts millions of visitors from all over the world every year. This year, it starts on November 27 and is open until Christmas Eve.
