Art festival shows 23 works on the theme of protest

This summer's "Begehungen" art festival is dedicated to the theme of protest - the artists have now been chosen. A jury has selected 23 works for the exhibition: from expansive installations, paintings and graphics, sculptures and performances to video and sound art, the organizers announced on Monday. Works by up-and-coming artists will be presented alongside established names from the national and international art scene. Among those represented are Edgar Leciejewski, Johanna Reich and Julia Lübbecke from Germany, as well as Pavel Molhar from Belarus, Kubra Khademi from Afghanistan and Helena Hernandez from Mexico.

This brings together very local views on the subject with perspectives from Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, it said. The festival, which has been presenting contemporary art at different locations every year since 2003, is turning a former school into an exhibition space this time. The art will be shown from August 15 to 23 in the founding building of the Chemnitz school model, with which citizens once wanted to change the GDR's education system. In previous years, the festival has already been hosted in a former prison, a derelict swimming pool and an empty palace palace. The "Begehungen" are part of the program for Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025.
