Two convicted climate activists have been granted immunity from prosecution following the attack on the "Sistine Madonna" in Dresden's Old Masters Picture Gallery - in appeal proceedings. The Dresden Regional Court halved their fine to 300 euros, which is legally binding. The criminal court considered the ongoing restitution to be a mitigating factor. Both have paid over 2,000 euros in compensation to the State Art Collections.
In August 2022, the members of the then climate protest group "Last Generation" taped themselves to the golden frame of the famous altarpiece "The Sistine Madonna" by Raphael while the museum was open to visitors - in the name of climate protection. A restorer removed it again.
In June 2024, the Dresden District Court sentenced them to a fine of 600 euros each for joint damage to property after the young woman and her companion appealed against penalty orders for 1,500 euros.
Settlement for damages
In September 2024, the defendants agreed to a settlement in proceedings for damages brought by the Free State before a civil chamber at Dresden Regional Court. As part of the settlement, they have to pay a total of 5,500 euros. Almost 10,400 euros had been demanded for repair costs and lost income due to the temporary closure of the famous museum.
