A new General Music Director, a world premiere and a festival for the composer Albert Lortzing: Oper Leipzig is starting the 2025/26 season with a varied program. At the annual press conference in Leipzig, Artistic Director Tobias Wolff presented the program together with the future General Music Director Ivan Repušić.
This is the last season for Wolff, who has been at the helm of Oper Leipzig since 2022. He is to become director of the Braunschweig State Theater in summer 2026. "The fact that this season is my farewell season in Leipzig due to the early call to the Staatstheater Braunschweig makes me wistful." At the same time, he is looking forward to the coming season, which has a packed program.
A total of 14 premieres are planned between mid-September 2025 and June 2026 - including Giuseppe Verdi's "Falstaff", directed by Marlene Hahn and conducted by Repušić. The world premiere of the opera "Coming Up for Air", a composition by Bernd Franke based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Sarah Leipciger, has been announced for March 2026.
A festival puts Lortzing in the spotlight
A central item on the program is the "Lortzing 26" festival, which will take place from 24 April to the beginning of May 2026. Two premieres, several revivals and an extensive supporting program are planned in honour of the composer Albert Lortzing - including city tours, an academic conference and an open stage on Augustusplatz.
The Leipzig Ballet is also presenting several new productions in the new season. These include a modern adaptation of "Eurydice" and the classic "The Nutcracker" at Christmas time. Musikalische Komödie is staging the musical "The Addams Family" and the cult operetta "Im weißen Rössl", among others.
Jubilee, climate protection and children's choir in focus
The Junge Oper Leipzig is celebrating the 20th anniversary of children's choir director Sophie Bauer in the new season and is presenting three new productions - including a piece on climate change and a new children's choir project. The program also includes inclusive offers as well as new digital formats and educational offers for all age groups.
Tickets go on sale on 3 June. The new "Klassik-Match-Card" will also be available from August, allowing people under 30 to purchase tickets at a reduced price in advance.
