The winners of the Filmfest Dresden short film festival have been announced. The Saxon Film Prize - the festival's highest endowed award with 20,000 euros - went to "Saigon Kiss" by Hong Anh Nguyen about the encounter between two young, queer women in Ho Chi Minh City at the award ceremony in the evening, as announced by the Filmfest.
"Every cinematic decision - from the camera work to the casting to the music - seems carefully chosen and comes together to form a sensitively composed overall work that is convincing and enchanting," said the jury of the national competition, explaining its decision.
Double success for "Do Something" and "Panadrilo"
Two awards went to the German production "Do Something". Sofija Zivkovic received the Golden Rider for Best Animated Film and the Audience Award in the national competition. According to the jury's statement, the film provides "an approachable, human approach to the topic of mental health".
There was also a double winner in the international competition: the entry "Panadrilo" from Panama by Marcela Heilbron, which deals with migration experiences, was voted best short film by the jury and received the Arte Short Film Award. "An unusual, fantastic narrative that seems like a fairy tale," is how the Arte jury described the film.
Winning films to be screened on Sunday
This year, the film festival entered its 37th edition. A total of 17 prizes worth 70,500 euros were awarded. Eight juries and the audience chose their favorites from 67 short films in the three competitions. All award-winning films can be seen again on Sunday, the last day of the festival.
