The European Cultural Awards will be presented in the future Capital of Culture Chemnitz on May 9. The winners include ice skater Katarina Witt, actor Matthias Schweighöfer and fashion designer Wolfgang Joop, according to the organizers. A young talent award goes to the Dresdner Kreuzchor. The band Alphaville and the DJ and producer Purple Disco Machine will also be honored. The awards will be presented at a gala in the Chemnitz Opera House.
"The fact that the European Cultural Award 2025 will be presented in Chemnitz is a strong signal and a special highlight for the Capital of Culture," said Saxony's Minister of Culture Barbara Klepsch (CDU).
Matthias Schweighöfer, who grew up in Chemnitz, was described by the jury as "one of the city's most famous sons". The actor emphasized in the press release: "It means a lot to me that I can now travel to Chemnitz again for this very special occasion."
The Dresden-based association "Europäisches Kulturforum e. V." has been honouring personalities, initiatives, artists, politicians or institutions for their services to Europe since 2017.
