The art critics' association AICA has chosen a show at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig as the exhibition of the year 2023. "Re-Connect. Art and Struggle in the Brotherland" on the GDR's immigration history and its consequences was an "intensive, discursive and emotionally moving reappraisal" of the GDR's international relations, the association announced on Wednesday. The first part of the three-part project presented works by artists from the so-called socialist brother countries. The show was on display from May to September 2023.

The art critics chose the Brücke Museum in Berlin as Museum of the Year. With its Expressionism collection, the museum under the direction of Lisa Marei Schmidt has "developed pioneering models for a critical examination of its own history and collection", they said. From AICA's perspective, the "Brücke" artists are critically contextualized with a view to colonial history and National Socialism. "At the same time, the museum positions itself with advanced exhibitions of contemporary art."

"Amt 45 i" by US artist Cameron Rowland on slavery and colonization at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt am Main was also singled out by the AICA association as a special exhibition.
