Whether to the sea in the north or to the mountains in the south, Autobahn GmbH is expecting the highways to be fuller this coming weekend due to the travel traffic around Easter. "Due to the staggered vacation dates, a slight increase in vacation traffic can be expected for the first time two weeks before Easter - from Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6," the federally owned company announced.
In the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, the Easter vacations will already begin next week. In Saxony, they start on April 18 - just in time for the start of the expected nationwide peak travel period. According to the forecast, it is likely to be particularly busy around Maundy Thursday (April 17), when many commuters and holidaymakers will be on the road at the same time. The freeway company is also expecting heavy return traffic on Easter Monday (21 April).
Construction sites as an additional brake
Drivers in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia should also be prepared for numerous construction sites. Obstructions are to be expected at several points on the Autobahn 4 - including between Wandersleben and Erfurt-West, Erfurt-Vieselbach and Weimar, Bucha and Jena-Göschwitz, Ronneburg and Chemnitz-Glösa and between the Nossen and Dresden-West interchange. The section between Weißenberg and Görlitz is also affected.
In Thuringia, construction is also underway on the A9 between Hermsdorf-Süd and Lederhose. In Saxony-Anhalt, the A9 near Dessau-Süd is affected, as is the A2 between Marienborn/Helmstedt and Eilsleben and between Ziesar and Brandenburg. There may also be delays on the A72 near Zwickau (east to west).
Digital helpers against Easter traffic jams
Autobahn GmbH recommends that holidaymakers check the current traffic situation and roadworks on their planned route in advance. An interactive traffic jam map is available on the company's website.
