The number of children in Saxony is expected to fall in the coming years. Will staff have to leave or even close nurseries as a result? A moratorium should prevent this.

The Left Party wants to prevent the closure of nurseries due to falling child numbers in Saxony with a moratorium on nurseries. A corresponding motion has been submitted for the next session of the state parliament on September 26, the opposition parliamentary group announced.

The aim is to retain staff, even if fewer children need to be cared for. This should improve the childcare ratio. To this end, the state must at least maintain its subsidies at the current level and increase them appropriately for the future, according to the motion. The state parliament should instruct the old and future government accordingly.

The SPD had also already spoken out in favor of using declining child numbers to improve childcare for girls and boys. At the end of July, Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping emphasized that kindergartens must remain local and staff must be retained. Over the next 10 years, the number of kindergarten children will decrease by around 15 percent. Minister of Education Christian Piwarz (CDU) had also spoken out in favor of retaining staff despite falling numbers of children. This would allow them to receive more individual support.
