Kilometers of marching, aching legs, irrepressible will: several thousand participants took part in the mammoth march in Leipzig - across the city and through the countryside.

Thousands of people took part in the so-called mammoth march in Leipzig on Saturday. As the organizer announced on request, there were around 9,000 participants. The extreme hike started in several groups from the early hours of the morning at the Scheibenholz racecourse. Participants could choose between three route lengths: 30, 42 or 55 kilometers.

The event attracts participants from all over Germany and beyond, including guests from Spain and Denmark. The routes lead through some of the city's most famous sights, including the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, the Leipzig Auwald forest and several lakes in the surrounding area.

The Mammoth March first took place in 2006 as a private long-distance project and has since developed into a Europe-wide event series. In addition to Leipzig, there are events in Berlin, Duisburg, Vienna, Copenhagen and Barcelona, among others.
