The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are a hiking paradise. But it's not just in summer that tourists can get their money's worth.

Saxon Switzerland is courting winter tourists. The region's tourism association offers a whole range of options especially for the winter vacations. "Cross mystical gorges and climb majestic table mountains in the morning, experience traditional crafts in the afternoon or play board games in a cozy atmosphere," the association recommends for the cold season.

Winter hiking maps with 40 tours

For hiking enthusiasts, there is a special winter hiking map with 40 routes. The "Saxon Switzerland Games Weeks" are among the best-known festivals of their kind in Germany. At Königstein Fortress, in the Bad Schandau National Park Center and in various hotels, game fans can try out around 100 community, dice, board, family and strategy games until March.

Visitor magnet Königstein Fortress

The numerous castles and palaces in the region are also among the visitor magnets - above all Königstein Fortress with its numerous exhibitions. "During the winter vacations, the family-friendly museum offers a wide range of adventure and creative activities: from jewelry design and collage workshops to evening torchlight tours with a creepy effect." There are school vacations in Saxony from February 17 to March 1.

House of the Artificial Flower in Sebnitz

The tourism association praises the House of the German Artificial Flower in Sebnitz as a European rarity. This is one of the last businesses in the German-speaking world where deceptively real-looking flowers are still made by hand from silk using traditional methods. Visitors can watch the artisans at work - and even try their hand at "Blümeln", as the locals call the craft.

Premiere for the "Wintersterne" festival

The "Wintersterne" festival is being held for the first time this year. From January 31 to February 9, twelve cities and municipalities will be hosting more than 40 art and cultural events. The program includes concerts, theater performances, winter hikes and more. These include performances by the Hohnstein hand puppet show at the Max Jacob Theater.
