In the past water sports season, the two locks in Leipzig were used less than in the previous year. Between the beginning of April and the end of October 2023, 31,260 watercraft, mainly paddle boats, were counted - compared to 32,194 in the previous season, as the city administration announced on Tuesday before the start of the new season. A good two thirds of the boats passed through the Connewitz lock.
In addition, more than 2,000 stand-up paddle boards (SUP) were transferred at the facilities, it said. Almost 8400 paddle boats used the fish canoe pass at the Connewitz lock. "This facility next to the lock, also known as a canoe slide, helps both fish and paddlers to overcome the gradient in a channel," it said.
From Easter Monday, the Connewitz lock in the south of the trade fair city and the lock on Lake Cospuden can be used for water sports again - from May to September even two hours longer until 8 p.m.
