The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) in Saxony has called for more diplomatic initiatives to end the war in Ukraine. "Many Easter marches will take place again over the holidays, including in Saxony. People are longing for peace, for weapons to finally be laid down and for the killing of innocent people to stop," BSW head Sabine Zimmermann told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. "BSW strongly condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine - but we do not believe that more and more arms deliveries from the West to Ukraine will help to end the war. On the contrary: we have never been so close to a third world war."
The only way out of the war is to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table, says the politician. "I don't see any politician making a serious effort to negotiate. But if someone from the traffic light coalition dares to do so - like Rolf Mützenich (SPD) - then everyone else immediately pounces on him and condemns him." Zimmermann sees Saxony's head of government Michael Kretschmer (CDU) as a "lone fighter" within his party, as he is calling for peace negotiations. "With our fundamental peace policy convictions, we oppose the position of the German government that Russia can be brought to its knees with weapons."
