The CDU in Saxony continues to strictly reject cooperation with the AfD following their clear victory in the European elections on Sunday. "We have clear substantive reasons why there can be no cooperation with this party," said General Secretary Alexander Dierks in Dresden on Monday. Everyone had been able to observe how this party had positioned itself in recent years. It benefits from the mood and experience of powerlessness of many people. With regard to federal politics, the impression has arisen that not enough is being done in key areas. However, this does not change the CDU's position on the AfD.

In December 2023, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony classified the Saxon AfD state association as a confirmed right-wing extremist movement. The party is legally defending itself against this. An incompatibility resolution applies to the CDU. It rules out cooperation with the AfD as well as with the Left Party.

Dierks called the election result for the European Parliament at federal level a "very clear receipt" for the traffic light government of the SPD, Greens and FDP. In the whole of eastern Germany, however, it was not possible to turn the mood of the population into a mood for the CDU/CSU. "That does not satisfy us." The Union's goal remains to become the strongest force in the Free State in the state elections on September 1. "What the Free State of Saxony needs is a clear course, a government capable of action and supported by a majority in the civic center."
