Saxony has stepped up its protection of Jewish institutions and action against anti-Semitism. The number of cases rose to an all-time high by 2023. Now the upward trend seems to have stopped.

For the first time in years, the trend in anti-Semitic crimes in Saxony is on the decline again. According to the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), the number of cases fell last year compared to 2023. However, they are still higher than in previous years. Concrete figures are not yet available; according to an LKA spokesperson, the exact statistics for 2024 will be published in a few weeks.

These statistics include verbal and physical attacks directed against Jewish institutions or people of Jewish faith. The most frequent targets were religious representatives.

Increase in the number of cases by 2023

Since 2019, insults, hate speech and attacks on institutions have increased, especially against visibly Jewish people. The number of attacks in this area almost tripled by 2023. There was a steady increase from 70 to 201 acts, with a provisional high of 275 cases, according to the LKA.

The LKA attributes the decline that has now been recorded to the growing sensitivity of the investigating authorities towards anti-Semitic crimes and the increased protection of endangered objects such as synagogues.

The state association of Jewish communities recently complained that everyday anti-Semitism is on the rise. Representatives reported verbal attacks in public, fear of openly wearing symbols of Judaism and hate mail directly in their inboxes.

In 2021, a guide for police and public prosecutors was developed in order to be able to recognize, process and punish even more acts and shed light on the dark field in this area.
