Saxony's former Finance Minister Hartmut Vorjohann has always opposed calls for a softening of the debt brake. Now he is stepping down. How does he look back on his time in office?

Saxony's Finance Minister Hartmut Vorjohann (CDU) will no longer be a member of the new government in the Free State and has a positive summary after five years in charge of his department. "We were able to achieve a lot together: be it the double budgets or the negotiations with the municipal family on financial equalization," the 61-year-old told the German Press Agency.

We also "rolled up our sleeves and got to work" in the area of construction and property tax reform, for example. In times of the corona crisis and in view of the consequences of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, this was "actually done in a state of permanent crisis". Looking at the economic indicators, the situation is not getting any easier, but these challenges must also be faced.

"In a democracy, taking on a state office is always a temporary position," said Vorjohann. How long one holds this office depends on the political balance of power, but also on personal ideas. He had always had intergenerational justice in mind, for example. He wished the future government wise decisions and a lucky hand.

Vorjohann, who took over as Minister of Finance in 2019 and was previously responsible for the finances of the state capital Dresden, had always rejected calls for a softening of the debt brake. He saw himself as an advocate of a sound budgetary policy.
