The Greens' party conference was actually supposed to focus on evaluating the state election campaign. Now the focus is also shifting to dealing with the minority government of the CDU and SPD.

At a party conference in Chemnitz, the Saxon Greens want to define principles for cooperation with the planned minority government made up of the CDU and SPD. These include the exclusion of cooperation with the AfD and reliable support for Ukraine. The state executive board will put a corresponding urgent motion to the vote.

A minority government made up of the CDU and SPD is ten votes short of a majority, which is why it is dependent on support from other parliamentary groups. The SPD and CDU have therefore announced a so-called consultation mechanism, through which the views of other parliamentary groups are to be incorporated into the legislative process - including, in principle, those of the AfD. However, the Greens are calling for cooperation with the party, which has been classified by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a right-wing extremist organization, to be ruled out.

At the party conference on Saturday, the party also wants to evaluate this year's state election campaign and draw lessons for the upcoming federal election campaign. At two further meetings in December, a new state executive committee will be elected and the state list for the federal election will be drawn up.

The Greens only received 5.1 percent of the vote in the state election on September 1 - 3.8 percentage points less than in 2019 - and only just made it into parliament. After their first time in government in Saxony, the Greens are now back in opposition. The previous coalition of CDU, SPD and Greens no longer has a majority.
