The municipality of Großschönau (district of Görlitz) is receiving around 15.1 million euros in funding for the renovation of its year-round swimming pool "Trixi-Bad". As announced by the Saxon Ministry of Economic Affairs, the funding comes from the "Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure" (GRW) program, which is funded equally by the federal and state governments. Acting Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig (SPD) presented the funding decision to District Administrator Stephan Meyer (CDU).
The Trixi pool, which opened in 1998, attracts up to 150,000 visitors a year and is still essentially in its original condition. However, after more than 25 years of intensive operation, urgently needed modernization is planned. The funding will be used to redesign the sauna area, modernize the swimming pool and functional areas, expand the toddler area and green the roof by the end of 2027. According to the information provided, the total costs amount to around 23.7 million euros, of which 20.1 million euros are eligible for funding.
Impulse generator for the region
With the investment in the pool, the Free State wants to support the tourism infrastructure in rural areas. "The popular Trixi pool should remain a magnet for visitors and continue to attract visitors to the Zittau Mountains Nature Park in the future," said Dulig. The funding would therefore not only strengthen the spa itself, but also the accommodation, retail, gastronomy and service providers - and therefore many jobs - in the immediate vicinity.
The GRW program, which is financed by the federal government and the Free State of Saxony, serves to promote commercial investments and business-related infrastructure. Around 200 million euros in funding is available for 2024.
