In view of the turbulence in the global economy, Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has called for an end to party political tactics in the federal coalition negotiations. "This is really about the future of this country," said Kretschmer on the sidelines of an event in Berlin.
In response to the XXL package of import tariffs presented by Trump last week, stock markets around the world plummeted. Germany's leading index, the Dax, plummeted by around ten percent in the first few minutes of the first trading day of the new week.
"The world is getting more and more into chaos because of this American president and everything he is doing." In Germany, people need to pull themselves together now. Kretschmer called for the swift conclusion of a coalition agreement "based on clear, objective criteria". The economy must be strengthened, taxes and bureaucratic costs must be reduced, and social security contributions and electricity prices must also be lowered. Kretschmer is part of the core negotiating team of the CDU and CSU, which is discussing a joint coalition with the SPD.
