Unesco has designated the small Saxon town of Herrnhut as part of the settlements of the Moravian Church as a new World Heritage Site. Saxony's Minister President is delighted.

Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony, is delighted that Herrnhut has been designated a new World Heritage Site. "The people behind this success have achieved a great deal. The entire Free State benefits from this," explained the CDU politician. The responsible committee of the UN cultural organization announced its decision at a meeting in New Delhi this morning.

This makes Herrnhut the third World Heritage Site in Saxony. "These special places attract many visitors. They are places of encounter and inspiration. And places that give confidence and strength for the next tasks," says Kretschmer. Muskauer Park in Bad Muskau in Upper Lusatia and the Ore Mountains are also World Heritage Sites.

Herrnhut is the origin of the Evangelical Moravian Church. Religious refugees from Moravia founded the town in 1722. The missing "d" in the name of the congregation "Brüdergemeine" is due to the language of the time, when people still spoke of Gemeine.

Herrnhut was now added to the list itself via a transnational expansion application. The town in eastern Saxony sought recognition together with Bethlehem in Pennsylvania in the USA and Gracehill in Northern Ireland.
