The Saxon Left Party is heading into the state parliamentary elections on September 1 with its leadership duo Susanne Schaper (46) and Stefan Hartmann (56) at the helm. Schaper received 93.7 percent of the votes for first place on the list at a representatives' meeting in Bautzen on Saturday, while Hartmann came second with 88.6 percent. There were no opposing candidates.

Previously, the Left Party had adopted the election manifesto with four chapters at a separate party conference. In addition to the topics of the world of work, the economy and climate, it also covers social services of general interest, education, democracy and social cohesion. According to Hartmann, the program is characterized by the "social DNA" of the left.

In the last state election in 2019, the Left Party received 10.4% of the second votes in Saxony. According to the latest polls, they are in danger of re-entering parliament. Most recently, they only achieved 5 percent. However, there is an upward trend in membership. There are currently around 6100.
