The Mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung (SPD), is to become the new President of the Association of German Cities. He is to be elected at the Annual General Meeting in May at the suggestion of the SPD group in the umbrella organization of local authorities, as confirmed by a spokesperson. Jung would then replace Markus Lewe (CDU), Lord Mayor of Münster. The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" had previously reported on this.
The Association of Cities and Towns is an association of around 3,200 German cities and municipalities. Jung was already President of the association from 2019 to 2021 and is currently Vice President.
Born in Siegen, he has been Lord Mayor of Leipzig for 19 years. He was previously an alderman of the city from 1999. Before moving into politics, Jung taught German and Protestant religion at a grammar school in Siegen. From 1991, he was principal of a comprehensive school in Leipzig. Jung is 57 years old and has five children.
