Leipzig has experienced a building boom in recent decades; many open spaces have disappeared. Now there are protests against the planned development of a brownfield site.

Citizens in Leipzig have protested against the planned development of the so-called Jahrtausendfeld site. A new private school is to be built on the 2.5-hectare former industrial site. The environmental association Ökolöwe spoke of around 500 participants in the protest; the police could not initially be reached for information.

According to the city, the Leipzig International School wants to establish an educational campus on the Jahrtausendfeld. Up to 2,000 children are to be taught there in the long term.

The Ökolöwe and a citizens' initiative have criticized the project as oversized and are calling for the open space in the Lindenau district on the border with Plagwitz to be preserved. They are campaigning for a development plan procedure to be carried out in which the area is designated as a green space.
