The exploratory talks for a joint coalition with the BSW and SPD have collapsed - now the Christian Democrats are sounding out their own ranks as to how a stable government can be formed.

The CDU in Saxony plans to meet in Lichtenwalde near Chemnitz at the weekend to discuss the next steps in forming a new government in the state. After the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance broke off the exploratory talks last Wednesday and prefers to play politics in opposition, the CDU/CSU finds itself in a difficult situation. As things stand, its only option is a minority government, in which it is dependent on other parliamentary parties.

In addition to the state parliamentary group, the state executive committee of the Saxon CDU/CSU is also meeting at Lichtenwalde Castle.

CDU Minister President Michael Kretschmer confirmed on Thursday on the "X" platform that he wanted to form a government capable of taking action. He did not specify how he intends to do this. He emphasized that his benchmark is that the country and its people come first.

SPD as a partner?

Since then, there has been speculation as to whether and which partner he could choose for a minority government. In such a variant, a government without its own majority is tolerated or supported by other parliamentary groups. The SPD is seen as a likely partner.

According to political scientist Tom Thieme, a minority government is not expected to lead to "the downfall of Saxony's state parliament". In Thuringia, Left Party politician Bodo Ramelow has led a minority government for the past five years, even if its track record is mixed. In the end, however, the alliance survived the entire legislative period, Thieme told the German Press Agency.
