Tom Unger will take over the office of CDU General Secretary in Saxony from State Parliament President Alexander Dierks. According to a press release, this was decided by the state party executive at the suggestion of Minister President and party chairman Michael Kretschmer. Unger will therefore hold the office on an interim basis until the election at a state party conference.
The Union is an important anchor for stability, he said according to the press release. "As Secretary General, I would like to work with our district associations, federations and members to help strengthen the Saxon Union as a civic, innovative party committed to the well-being of the people." Unger is a member of the board of the Erzgebirge CDU district association and was state chairman of the Junge Union Sachsen & Niederschlesien from 2017 to 2019. He has also been a member of the state parliament since January 2022.
Dierks had been Secretary General of the CDU in Saxony since 2017. He relinquished the post when he was elected President of the state parliament. According to the statement, Kretschmer thanked him for his services. "With him, we succeeded in becoming the strongest force in two state elections and repositioning the party in many areas - for example with a new basic programme, more digitalization and numerous dialogue events," he said. A committed personality is still needed in the office, and Unger is the right person for the job.
