In Saxony, the proportion of Ukrainians in the total population was 1.4 percent last year. This was in line with the national average, according to a statement from the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday as of October 2023. The highest proportion of Ukrainians lived in Hamburg (1.7 percent), Berlin (1.6 percent) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (1.5 percent). The lowest percentages were in Rhineland-Palatinate, Schleswig-Holstein and Brandenburg (1.2 percent each).
According to the report, the total number of people with Ukrainian citizenship grew by around 121,000 to 1.15 million across Germany. According to the Saxony State Directorate, there were 60,476 Ukrainian asylum seekers living in the Free State at the end of 2023, almost 10,000 more than a year earlier (50,896).
