Over a year ago, the renowned Dresden Prize was given a new name. Now there are further changes - for an urgent reason.

A board of trustees now advises and supports the founders of the Dresden Peace Prize - International Peace Prize. The president is FDP politician and former Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhart Baum. "There is a stench of war in the world, and we all urgently need to do something about it," he said according to the press release. The Peace Prize is intended to gain a broader basis in civil society and create more dialog. Vice President Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, sees the international award as an "important and good sign" to achieve "lasting visibility for decent things" for Dresden and Saxony. The committee is made up of eleven representatives from culture, science, the church and journalism.

Renowned award on Remembrance Day

The prize has been awarded since 2010 as the Dresden Prize by the Friends of Dresden Germany association and the Klaus Tschira Foundation (Heidelberg) to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to peace and international understanding. This year's change of organization was accompanied by the renaming of the award to the Dresden Peace Prize. Previous recipients include former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, war photographer James Nachtwey, architect Daniel Libeskind and, posthumously, Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.
